Right after Imizamo Yethu fire in last weekend, Chinese community in Cape Town also took actions swiftly. Chinese community organizations went to donation points to provide cloth, shoes and daily necessities. They called for more contributions to the relief efforts. In next few days, an estimated R100,000 relief materials from Chinese community will be donated and then delivered to the affected residents of Imizamo Yethu.

Mr. Kang Yong, Consul General of China in Cape Town also wrote to Ald. Ian Neilson, Executive Deputy Mayor of City of Cape Town over the tragedy and expressed his strong support and best wishes.

Dear Alderman Neilson,

Hope this finds you well.

I am shocked to learn the sad news that Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay was hit by fire last Saturday, with hundreds of houses burnt down and thousands of local residents left homeless.

On behalf of the Chinese Consulate General, I would like to express to you, and through you, to the affected residents in Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay, our sincere sympathy and solicitude for their unexpected and heavy loss at this difficult time.

At the same time, I am heartened to see that the City of Cape Town has been mobilized immediately to help those affected by the fire.

I am also inspired to see that the local Chinese community is actively participating the efforts aiding the affected community. Some Chinese organizations are now sending their contributions to Pick'n'Pay and other donations points. The Chinese Policing Forum, joining hands with local Community Policing Forums, are donating relief materials worth around R100,000 in the following few days.

I fully believe that, under the strong leadership of the City of Cape Town, and with the unremitting efforts of related Municipal Departments, social organizations and local communities, the reconstruction of Imizamo Yethu will be swiftly conducted, and the affected residents will be back to their normal life at an early time.

I also wish to take this opportunity to advise you that, in the upcoming Cape Town Carnival on 18 March 2017, the Chinese community will for the first time join the parade, and showcase the colourful Chinese culture and the positive and inspiring image of the Chinese community as part of the Capetownian society.

It is my belief that, with the valuable support of the City of Cape Town and related Municipal Departments, the local Chinese community will continue to contribute to the economic and social development of Cape Town, and further integrate into the community and society of Cape Town.
