Xinjiang's unprecedented prosperity debunks western untruths
By CG Lin Jing, published on Cape Times, February 9

Xinjiang, namely Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region with the Uygurs having the largest population, is like a pearl located in Northwest China, which is one of China's five provincial-level ethnic minority autonomous regions. As early as almost 2000 years ago, the central government of Chinese Han dynasty began to effectively exercise military and political administration over Xinjiang. As China is a unified multiethnic country with 56 ethnic groups, the Uygur, Han, Kazak ,Hui and other various ethnic groups living in Xinjiang have long been part of the Chinese nation. Throughout its long history, Xinjiang has long been an inseparable part of Chinese territory and its development has been closely related to that of China.

Unfortunately, over the past year, amid the ravages of Covid-19 pandemic, some anti-China politicians in the western countries headed by the US, out of their selfish political interests and ideological bias against China, spared no efforts in spreading a political virus and fabricating groundless accusations against Xinjiang. They utilized social media to crazily hype up concocting issues like "genocide", "forced labor", "detention camps" in Xinjiang with a malicious attempt to sow discord in ethnic relations and disrupt development of China.

As a Xinjiang saying goes, lies never fool the locals. To certain anti-China politicians, they are indulging themselves to a law of propaganda that " repeat a lie enough and it becomes the truth". However, no matter how many times a lie is repeated, it can never change truth and statistics never lie.

There's never such a thing as "genocide" in Xinjiang. The truth is that Xinjiang is witnessing the most prosperous development period in history. Xinjiang's population has increased steadily. From 2010 to 2018, the population of ethnic minorities in Xinjiang increased from 12.9859 million to 15.8608 million, an increase of 2.8749 million, or 22.14%, higher than the increase of total population of the region, which was 13.99%; Meanwhile the Uygur population increased from 10.1715 million to 12.7184 million, an increase of 2.5469 million, or 25.04%, which is about twice the increase of the whole Xinjiang population. The growth rate was also significantly higher than, or in fact 12.5 times that of the Han population, which was only 2%.

There's never such a thing as "forced labor" in Xinjiang. The true is that some western politicians deliberately twisted the basic labor rights of the people of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang under the banner of human rights by hyping their false claims. Their acts amount to a denial of the fact that the local people in Xinjiang enjoy the right to work, aspire to move out of poverty and backwardness and are working towards that goal. In recent years, more than 1,200 diplomats including Arab ambassadors of the League of Arab States in China, journalists and representatives of religious groups from more than 100 countries have visited Xinjiang. They witnessed with their own eyes the unity, harmony, joy and peace of the local employees and people of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang.

There's never such a thing as "detention camps" or "re-education camps "in Xinjiang. The fact is that the vocational education and training centers legally established in Xinjiang were actually schools providing training courses to jobless and unskilled local people. These schools with the character of deradicalization are no different in essence from the "community corrections" enforced in the US, the DDP (Desistance and Disengagement Programme) in the UK, and the deradicalization centers in France, all being conducive attempt and proactive exploration for preventive counterterrorism and deradicalization, complying with the principles and spirits of United Nations Global Counter-terrorism Strategy and other anti-terrorism resolutions.

Furthermore, against the impacts of Covid-19 pandemic, Xinjiang's GDP growth rate in 2020 reaches 3.4%, 1.1 percentage points higher than the national growth rate of 2.3%, and the per capita GDP exceeds 8400 US dollars. No single case of violent terrorism has been occurred in Xinjiang for the past 5 years. More than 3 million people were lifted out of poverty under the current poverty line and the absolute poverty issue in Xinjiang has been solved historically. All iron-clad facts and statistics clearly demonstrate that Xinjiang has never been more prosperous than it is now, with unprecedented achievements in socio-economic development and improvement of people's life. So-called "genocide" in Xinjiang is a big lie of the century and deliberately fabricated political propaganda.

Like South Africa is referred to as a rainbow nation, Chinese nation is like a big garden with 56 flowers of ethnic groups and people of Han, Uygur, Tibetan and all other ethnic groups are equal members of one family. The legitimate interests of all the minor ethnic groups are explicitly and strictly protected by the Constitution of the People's Republic of China that China is a unitary multi-national state built up jointly by the people of all its nationalities. All nationalities are equal and the state does its utmost to promote the common prosperity of all nationalities in the country.

History will prove under the strong leadership of Communist Party of China and the socialist system with Chinese characteristics, Xinjiang will surely brace a brighter future and enjoy sustained prosperity and stability.
