Speech at the South Africa Chinese Annual Easter

Ladies and Gentlemen:

It is a great pleasure for my wife and me to attend the South Africa Chinese Annual Easter Tournament here in the beautiful city of Nelson Mandela Bay. I would like to, on behalf of the Chinese Ambassador to South Africa Mr. Tian Xuejun, and the Consulate General in Cape Town, extend our warmest congratulations.

Over the past 50 years, the Annual Easter Tournament   becomes not only a sports event but also a festival for the Chinese people in South Africa. It serves as a platform for them to get to know each other and to deepen fraternal friendship. It also helps to demonstrate the fine traditions of the Chinese people to strive for the best and to realize their goals.

Ladies and Gentlemen: Although you are far away from your mother country, your thoughts are always with her. You have done a lot in China's reform and opening up to the outside world and in its economic development. You also play a positive role in the process of reunification of the motherland. 

Ladies and Gentlemen: Let me say a few words about the present situation across the Taiwan Straits. Since 2008, the cross-Straits relationship has realized a historic transition. On the common basis of opposing "Taiwan independence", and sticking to the "1992 Consensus", the two sides have established political trust and developed positive interactions. Cross-Straits economic cooperation, cultural exchanges and people-to-people ties are flourishing. The peaceful development of cross-Straits relations and unprecedented peace and stability across the Straits are increasingly supported by the people in Taiwan and welcomed by the international community. Past progress shows that peaceful development of the cross-Straits relations is the right path and accords with the shared desire of compatriots across the Straits, the overall interests of the Chinese nation and the development trend of times. We will steadfastly follow the right path of peaceful development of cross-Straits relations, work for new prospects in the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations, and constantly promote the course of China's peaceful reunification. And I am sure with concerted efforts of all our compatriots at home and abroad, we will certainly reach our goal of reunification at an early date.

Ladies and Gentlemen: It has been 15 years since China and South Africa established diplomatic relations. In these years, the friendly relations of our two countries develop steadfastly, political mutual trust is further enhanced, people to people exchanges have become more frequent, trade and economic cooperation expand greatly. Last year, our total trade reached US$59.9 billion. And this week, Chinese President Xi Jinping paid a state visit to South Africa and attended the "Brics" Summit in Durban. His visit has greatly promoted our friendly relationship.

Ladies and Gentlemen: You have contributed a lot in promoting the friendship between our two countries for which we are grateful. A better relationship between our two countries will in no doubt help create a better environment for you to work and live. Let's work together for an even better relationship between our two countries. I wish you all the best in this "rainbow country", a country with vitality and hope.

Finally, I wish the Annual Easter Tournament a complete success.
